Review of Waking the Dragon (Vale of Stars #1) by Juliette Cross

Waking the Dragon

Desire vs Defiance

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book Length (Est.): 248 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

The Gladium Province is on the verge of civil unrest as humans and Morgons, the dragon-hybrid race, clash once more. But amid disorder can also arise passion.

When the bodies of three human women are discovered in Morgon territory—with the DNA of several Morgon men on the victims—it’s just a matter of time before civil unrest hits the Province. But for ambitious reporter Moira Cade, it’s more than just a story, and it may mean risking her own life.

Descending into the dark underworld of Morgon society, Moira is paired with Kol Moonring, Captain of the Morgon Guard, for her protection. Fiercely independent, Moira bristles at his dominance, and defies his will at every turn. Yet resistance proves futile when passion flares between them, awakening powerful emotions within both, body and soul. But as the killings continue, can their fiery newfound bond survive an even greater evil—one that threatens all of humanity, Morgonkind, and Moira’s very soul?…

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Kensington Books in exchange for an honest review*

This is a spinoff of the Nightwing Series and so far I love it just as much. Moira’s older sister set a new age in motion when she married a Morgon, and as a happily married woman and mother she cannot wait for her sister to settle down. However, Moira is pretty set in her way and finding a man isn’t on her agenda. Not even the sweet and sexy Morgon men that she keeps getting set unwillingly up with.

That is until a story she’s working on puts her in danger and she ends up having to work closely with a very dominant and kinda scary Morgon…though she’d never admit that to him or back down from his intimidation tactics.

Kol isn’t very fond of humans, but when’s he forced to work with one he does so without argument. Of course, he has one very important reason for keeping such a close eye on her. He hates it and lord knows he won’t admit it, but he couldn’t stay away from her if he tried. His dragon wants her and it doesn’t plan on letting her get away no matter how strong-willed and defiant she it.

Waking the Dragon is an addicting read. Once I started it and got sucked into the world of humans, Morgons, and myths so old they turned into fairytales, I had a very difficult time putting it down. Although Moira and Kol get the happily ever after there’s still much of the story to be told. There’s still spies among them, a monstrous Morgon they have to identify, and secret sects they still need to uncover and destroy. I cannot wait to read more of this series!

My Favorite Moments: I really enjoyed the conversations between Moira and Kol. They are both stubborn alpha characters who’ve built walls around their hearts so big that it’s surprising anything can penetrate them. They’re both snarky and right from the beginning their interactions will leave you smiling.
