Review of The Protector (Fire’s Edge #4) by Abigail Owen

“Your need…it’s torture.”

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Suspense, Shifters (Dragons)

Length: 254 Pages

POV: Third Person

Description:

The cousin of the High King, Lyndi Chandali has lived with the constant threat of being pawned off as a political prize. A rare, female-born dragon like Lyndi can’t truly mate—not in the way it counts. Which is why she’s kept her distance from a certain sinfully delicious Beta. Instead, she’s built a life for herself giving orphaned dragons in the Americas a home.

As Beta of his team of enforcers, Levi Rowtag is a fighter first, last, and always. His job is to protect—his team, the shifters in his territory, and the stubborn woman hell-bent on fighting with him at every turn. He knows from the moment they first meet what she’ll never accept—they are destined to be mated.

But with the kings at war, the enemy is now coming for Lyndi. Worse, he’s coming for her orphans, too. He’ll have no choice but to defy his king and go rogue if he has any hope of protecting them all…and finally claiming his mate.

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author via Entangled Publishing & NetGalley.*

Lyndi and Levi were drawn to each other from the first moment they saw each other, even before they met officially, but based on their knowledge of their dragon culture they both knew they could never be mates and so they each did their part to stay away from the other.

Lyndi used anger. She thought Levi didn’t want her on their team because she was female born. He’d protest when they sent her out without him and any other time he’d be right there beside her. In her eyes, he didn’t trust her usefulness. In his, he was protecting what was his.

“I dare you to be brave enough to love me back.”

Levi used Lyndi’s anger as a sign she hated him. It didn’t deter his want or need to protect her, or even be close to her, but he tried whenever possible. They were both good at ignoring the desires for one another…for centuries they each believed the other hated them making it easy, but they didn’t fool anyone else.

When Levi is tasked with leaving the enforcers he decides to put it all on the line. And Lyndi loses her fight to suppress her wants once she realizes he may leave for good. When these two collide it’s pure fireworks. Although Levi and his dragon both know how they feel about Lyndi, it takes her much longer to realize it.

“I plan to claim your gorgeous body over, and over, and over, until you’re walking sideways. That’s how much I want you.”

One of my favorite parts of this book is Lyndi’s orphans. She’s like their mom, and to see how protective of her they are is heartwarming. Each and every single one will fight for her, even the youngest who hasn’t even shifted yet. Her heart is huge, and it only continues to show when she expands her caring for even the strangest of creatures…including a cave troll. And of course Levi.

The Protector is the fifth book in the Fire’s Edge series and each one seems to get better as they bring us closer and closer to hopefully a new dragon world where Pytheios is dead along with all of his followers; including the Mating Council. I cannot wait to continue the journey and see who the rest of the phoenixes pair up with.
