Review of Cover Me (The Donovan Family #5) by Margaret Watson

Cover Me

Partners in Passion

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Length (Est.): 364 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Chicago cop Brendan Donovan loves the adrenaline rush of his role on a tactical team. So when he’s assigned to an undercover job to ferret out the supplier of a new and deadly sex drug, he’s thrilled. His partner is Cilla Marini, a detective he’d met recently during a traffic stop. He’s intrigued by Cilla, but his sister told him that Cilla doesn’t date cops. Which is exactly what they have to pretend to do. Brendan loves a challenge.

Cilla is shocked to find out that Brendan is her mystery partner. After an incident that forced her to transfer from her district and isolated her from her fellow cops, Cilla knows relationships with cops are off the table. But she’s spent far too much time thinking about Brendan since he pulled her over for speeding. Now, not only are they working together, they have to pose as a couple to find the source of the sex drug that’s already killed several men.

As the action heats up, Cilla and Brendan don’t have to pretend they want each other. But when secrets put them both in danger, will they have each other’s back? Or will their quarry divide and conquer them before they can find their way to happily ever after?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Brendan is an act first ask questions later kind of guy. He’s spontaneous, which as a cop isn’t always a good thing, but that doesn’t keep him from being a damned good cop. His instincts are usually spot on…except when it comes to his own emotions.

Cilla isn’t used to working with a partner, but when her mystery partner on a new undercover job is the same cop who pulled her over for speeding she’s both cautious and tempted. Her new role as Brendan’s girlfriend has a lot of benefits, I mean who wouldn’t want to be manhandled by that sexy cop, but at the same time its hard to tell what’s real and what’s just for show.

“Okay. You going to make a move on me tonight?”

“You looking forward to it?”

She flushed. “Just want to be prepared. So I can practice my stupidly smitten expression.”

Their physical chemistry is off the charts, but both have emotional boundaries that keep them from living up to the full partner potential.

In Cover Me there are so many twists that overlap and spread out in different directions that there’s never a dull moment. There was only one slightly loose end, which tells you what should happen, but not if it actually happened or not. Besides that I think Brendan might be my favorite Donovan brother so far.

My Favorite Moment: The banter between Brendan and Cilla is crazy funny at times. I swear they live to screw with each other.

“I’ll get it out of you in the morning.”

She cocked an eyebrow. “I’d much rather you get it into me in the morning.”

Calling It

Oh, the catcher of dreams!

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Sports Romance

Book Length (Est.): 254 pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Baseball player Nathan Hawkins needs to get away from Chicago. After a near career-ending car accident and with paparazzi surrounding his penthouse, Nate can only think of one place to go: home. But when he finds his old apartment occupied by a half-naked woman wielding a baseball bat, he’s not sure what to think…except that maybe his luck has finally changed for the better.

Librarian Dorie Donelli never thought she’d get to meet her fantasy man in person–much less while she’s wearing her bathrobe. To her surprise, her nearly naked run-in with Nate leads to more unclothed encounters. But Dorie is sure their fling is only temporary. As long as she remembers he’ll be gone once his life gets back on track, she won’t get hurt. In the meantime, she throws herself into enjoying their three weeks together before he has to report for spring training and go back to his old life.

For Nate, being with Dorie is the only time in months that he finds himself smiling. Laughing. And he has no intention of letting that go. He might even befalling in love…if only Dorie will let him say the words. What they have isn’t just a dream, but the start of a dream come true.

Mindy’s Review:

*I received this book free from Netgalley on behalf of Tasty Books Tours in exchange for an honest review*

Nathan Hawkins is a baseball player in Chicago. After a near career ending car accident and a break up with his fiancé he decides he needs out of Chicago for a while. Heading home to see his family he decides the best place to go is his sister’s apartment since he pretty much owns it and has his own key. When he arrives unannounced he is greeted by a half-naked woman that is threatening him with his own baseball bat.

Dorie Donelli moved away from home to start her own life as a librarian. Dorie is a huge sports fan and she has fantasied about Nate Hawkins since she was a little girl. Never in her life did she imagine she would move to his home town and come face to face with him in her own home. Not to mention when she first meets him she does not have her glasses on and is blind as a bat.

Once she realizes who he is she continues the act of not knowing who he is since it seems he needs a break from reality. That does not last very long since his entire family lives in this one small town. Nathan has never felt this strong attraction to a woman before. But if he wants a relationship with Dorie he must get through to her that they can make this work. Dorie is dead set on this is just about sex. No real feeling involved.

This was a very good read. There is just something about those baseball players! The chemistry between Dorie and Nate is instant and oh so hot. Both of their families are funny and challenging at the same time. I sure hope this turns out to be a series!

My Favorite Moment: I have to say it was a lot of fun to read when they first met and she realized who was standing right in front of her.

Tasty Excerpt

It wasn’t until Nate looked down to turn off the phone that he remembered where he was—that the woman who lived here was down the hall. Hell, she’d probably barricaded herself in the bathroom in order to keep a locked door between her and the stranger who’d barged in on her in the middle of the night.

And ate her dinner, he thought with a quiet laugh.

He’d give her back her phone and let her know he was leaving. Nowhere to stay, but he had a very expensive tiny car he could sleep in.

He found her in the bedroom, changing the sheets, which he would have told her she didn’t have to do if his heart hadn’t just lodged itself directly into his throat, cutting off any possibility of speech. Her pajama pants and T-shirt weren’t nearly as revealing as the robe had been, but her bending over the bed and straightening out the corner stirred up something deep inside of him. And now the only thing running through his mind was how soft her hair would be when he wrapped it around his hand; how warm and wet she’d be when he buried himself inside her.

“Christ, woman,” he groaned. He grabbed the doorjamb above his head and he clutched it so hard he practically splintered the wood.

She gasped as she straightened up and spun around, her hand flying to her chest. “I was… I was just…”

She bit her lip and sank down until she was sitting on the edge of the bed. Her eyes met his, and he had to tell himself he couldn’t take her right here. He needed to focus on climbing out of this hole—he didn’t have the time to fall further in, no matter how enjoyable that might be.

But he couldn’t look away.

Her eyes were a deep dark brown, the same color as the hair piled on top of her head. He wanted to trace the golden skin along her collarbone to the hollow of her throat, wanted his tongue on every part of her. And the glasses she now wore almost undid him.

If she’d been wearing those with the robe? When she’d hiked that bat up over her shoulder?

Holy. Shit. Turned out he liked a woman who would take him on without even blinking an eye. Who knew?

He especially liked it when her interested gaze traveled down his chest, past his waist… He liked it too much, actually. Only the quickly summoned thought of David Ortiz slamming into him at home plate stopped him from embarrassing himself in a way he hadn’t since he was practically a kid.

Even that almost wasn’t enough when she said, “I, um, changed the sheets. So you can take the bed.”

All control vanished as the words just came pouring out of his mouth. “The only way I take the bed is if I take you in it with me.”

His heart nearly raced its way out of his chest in the seconds before she replied, “I bet you say that to all the girls.” Laughter danced in her eyes and a wicked grin came over her face when her eyes again dropped to his cock and then quickly came back up. She bit her bottom lip before whispering, “Hungry?”

Miguel Cabrera. Adrian Beltre. Derek fucking Jeter.

He gripped the doorjamb tighter.

“I could eat,” he answered as evenly as he could manage.

For a moment they just stayed where they were, staring.

When she stood and walked toward him, he almost blinked. This was a dream. It had to be. Or some elaborate setup that Pete had come up with in order to get Nate’s mind off everything else. Put this fantasy of a woman in front of him—feisty and looking so innocent and cute while she offered up anything he wanted to take—until he was so goddamn spent he could finally get over himself and start living his life again.

Except then she brushed past him as she walked out of the room, pausing only to whisper into his ear, “I think you need another minute.”

Review of Dragon Fate (Elise Ddraig, Dragon Chosen #3) by James D Horton

Dragon Fate

Never Take The Accepted Path

Genre:  Paranormal Romance, Shifter Romance

Book Length (Est.): 200+ Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

So as it turns out being the Chosen One of the Dragons isn’t really all it’s cracked up to be. Oh who am I kidding? It sucks. It sucks big time. Suck on a level of… I don’t even have an analogy for the level of suck.

My folks are the King and Queen of the Gold Dragon Clan. Oh and the First Knight is my other dad. Yeah, I know, two dads. Sue me, I’m a freak. Or maybe not so much in this day and age. Magically aged from three to nineteen, now a year later I’m finally starting to get my life together. You know, the one I was thrust into overnight. Toddler to adult in the blink of an eye with no learning curve in between. Now, here I am. I’ve got two great friends in Rose and Rory. Rose newly promoted Queen of the Werewolves, mostly, but that’s a story in it’s own.

I’ve got a hot boyfriend. Seriously, he’s really hot. He’s also… annoying as hell? Ugh, I shouldn’t even say that to myself. See the other part of being ‘Chosen’ is that I was reborn. In my last life Lou and I were married. We were together for years and for him all those memories, all that time, is still right now. The downside is for me, it’s the past.

My mentor, Remy, is an Ancient Black dragon and as it turns out he was the Chosen One of his age. And have I mentioned that he failed? Yeah the price of failure is that magic dies. One step at a time until it’s gone from the world completely. So, you know, no pressure or anything. I fail and every shifter, every witch, every creature that has a magical nature will just fade away.

I’m not ready to save the world…

Dragon Fate is the conclusion to the Elise Ddraig, Dragon Chosen Series.

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Elise still isn’t happy about being the Chosen One, but when life as she knows it is put in the balance she’ll have no choice but step up and be the person/dragon she was meant to be.

Lou is caught between a love lost and love that simply isn’t the same. He’s a protector and he needs to be loved by someone he can protect.

Chaos may be the Chosen One to destroy her and magic, but he has a few agendas of his own. If only he could get Elise on board with his radical movements then things would be right, but she isn’t one to follow and neither is he.

“Don’t stand against me. Let me do what has to be done.”

So much happens in Dragon Fate that it kept me glued to the pages. Surprise alliances, hidden agendas, true identities, and I love so deep it can overcome just about anything.

I love how the stories all entwine within one another bringing back characters from other short stories I’ve enjoyed. On that note, there are some more loose ends to tie up, but Luke seems to be on that. This one, however, does bring Elise’s story to an end…or is it a beginning?

My Favorite Moment: I’m not entirely sure why, but I absolutely loved the moment when Elise met Matthew. It  fully captured my attention and drew me into the moment.

Blog Tour – Review of Carnal: The Beast Who Loved Me (Exiled #1) by Victoria Danann **GIVEAWAY**

Captivating and Emotional

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book Length (Est.): 251 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

The first book in the new series, EXILED.

The angel, Kellareal, stopped the genocide of generations of hybrids, who had been bred for research and spent their entire lives imprisoned. Against orders, he spirited them away to a dimension where they would have freedom and purpose.

In a vindictive fit, Rosie Storm asked Kellareal for a place to hide out. He knew just the place for her to grow up, learn emotional control, and other things.

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from Book Enthusiast Promotions in exchange for an honest review*

Kellareal broke the rules when he transported the Exiled to another dimension. In essence he altered what would have naturally become in both dimensions.

Rosie is younger than she seems and hasn’t figured out that tantrums aren’t the way to get things, but then again one got her in a self-proclaimed timeout with the Exiled. Being there, helping out, it’s where she finds herself…and her heart’s desire.

Carnal is the eldest son of the Exiled’s leader, Free. He’s most definitely all alpha male and oh boy does he know it. But Rosie brings out a different side in him and it’s quite interesting to watch their relationship blossom.

“I don’t want to be your boy toy, Rosie.”

“Good. Then we’re agreed.” She looked pointedly at this hand on her wrist, detaining her progress.

“But I might want to be your man.”

Carnal brings something new and unique to life. The storyline and characters are captivating. I loved all of them…Free, Serene, Charming, even Deliverance. I found myself thinking about it instead of sleeping and oh my goodness when it ended….so so emotional! Even though I knew what was going to happen I couldn’t have unglued my eyes from that last chapter if I wanted to.

The only major downside was that since I haven’t read the Knights of Black Swan series I felt like I was missing something. This is the first book in the Exiled series, but I’m pretty sure it’s a spin-off from the Knights of Black Swan. It has little references throughout that made me wish I’d read the other series first.

My Favorite Laughable Moment: Dandy was pretty sweet once I got to know her and I loved her interactions with Rosie.

“Good. Back to work. And forget about Carnal.”

“You’re not forgetting about him, are you?”

“I am.” Dandy raised her eyebrows. “I am! Really!”

“Let’s take a walk. There’s a spot up above the training grounds. It’s quiet, private, pretty.” When she looked up at him, he bent and rubbed his nose against hers in a way that was not common for humans, but definitely sexy.

“What are we going to do there?” She hoped she didn’t sound as breathless, and eager, as she felt.

“I’m going to get to know everything there is to know about you, my little sex demon.”

“I’m not a sex demon, Carnal. I’m just part sex demon.”

“Okay,” he smiled. “If you say so. I just know that I’ve never felt this way about a female before. I figure something supernatural must be at work.”

Rosie didn’t know whether to be more thrilled about the proclamation that she was special to him or about the fact that his feelings were unusual enough to suspect that she’d bewitched him. She was thinking that she needed to tell Charming to keep the witchcraft book a secret when Carnal said, “So tell the truth. You’re part witch, right? Did you put a spell on me?”

He stopped and turned to face her.

She knew the drill at that point. He was fishing for half truths and untruths, so she met his eyes.

“No, Carnal. I have not used magic on you or altered the natural course of things in any way. Other than fixing your motorbike.”

“Motorcycle,” he corrected. “Would you like me to be under your spell?”

She laughed and pulled away. “I don’t have to answer that.”

He caught up with her quickly and fell into step beside her. “Free thinks you’ll be leaving soon.”

“Does he?”

“Is he right?”

“Honestly, Carnal, I guess I don’t know from one day to the next. Every day I wake up and think, ‘I’ll stay one more day’.”

“Why?” She gave him a confused look. “Not that I’m not glad you’re here, but from a purely clinical and objective standpoint, why have you stayed?”

“I’m not sure my answers would make sense.”

“Tell me anyway.”

“I like working at the Commons. I like living in your parents’ house. I like the way Charming treats me like a sister. I like Dandelion. I like that your father listens to my ideas and gives me respect.”

Carnal pulled her to a stop again and lifted her chin so that she had to look at him. “I didn’t hear anything in there about me.”

“I didn’t either.”

“Tell me. Am I part of the reason why you’ve stayed?”

This book picks right up where Everything I Left Unsaid stops. This book is full of love and suspense. The characters seemed more developed in this book which is very important as they are really getting into their relationship. With all of the stuff that they have gone through separately leaves them wondering how their relationship will blossom. When one is ready to move on the other holds back.

This was a very hard book to put down. There are awesome twists and turns that leave you wondering and guessing until you get your answer.

Blog Tour: Review of Bearing it All (Highlander’s Beloved #3) by Vonnie Davis

Bearing It All

Hilariously Feisty

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Shifter Romance (Werebears)

Book Length (Est.): 255 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis

A Scottish hunter and a French secret agent find themselves on a collision course with danger—and irresistible desire—in Vonnie Davis’s new bear-shifting Highlander novel, perfect for fans of Jennifer Ashley and Shelly Laurenston.

In the pine-dense mountains of the Scottish Highlands, shape-shifter Ronan Matheson is running free when a desperate woman parachutes out of the sky, directly onto his furry, powerful chest. Instead of clawing her to death, Ronan’s inner bear longs to keep her safe. Once he’s back in human form, Ronan is amused by the mysterious beauty’s fearless attitude—and tempted by her expertly toned physique. But what could she possibly be doing in this isolated stretch of the Highlands?

French intelligence agent Anisa Brosseau never imagined she’d be on the CIA’s bad side—until she’s framed for treason and forced to flee in a stolen drone. Hiding out in a remote cabin, Anisa just needs some time to clear her name. What she doesn’t need is a brooding, muscle-bound Scot in a skimpy kilt to drive her crazy with lust. But when Anisa’s enemies come knocking on his door, Ronan calls on a secret weapon to protect his turf and the bonny lass he’s come to love.

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Random House Publishing Group – Loveswept in exchange for an honest review*

I’m not sure which character I like more Anisa, Ronan, or his bear. Anisa is feisty and determined to take care of herself and the mess she’s in. Ronan is a stubborn man with a heart of gold. And Ronan’s bear is sweet, playful, loveable, and oh so fierce when protecting those he loves.

Anisa got set up for a crime she didn’t commit and once she gathered as much evidence as she could to prove that she ran. Landing in the snow, on a bear wasn’t exactly the destination she had in mind, but she tried to make the best of it. She even tried to make the best of having to stay with the sexy man in the cabin. Then again, that wasn’t the hardship she had initially thought it to be.

Ronan wanted piece and quiet, which is why he was away from his family and in his cabin, but that was the last thing he would get. He cursed that pink haired witch when he realized he’d been played by her. Of course I laughed when he opened the gift she’d secretly packed for him. I laughed even harder when his bear got a hold of that gift.

Magnus (Ronan’s bear) continually had me laughing throughout the book. He was either wanting to shift and play or he was shifting without Ronan’s knowledge and leaving him with quite the wardrobe problem.

Bearing It All is my favorite book in the series. It combined drama, an undeniable attraction, two very stubborn people, and one adorable bear. The characters were dynamic and the storyline intriguing. The only thing I didn’t like was how quickly the end came. Once everything caught up with Anisa the suspense intensified, but then it felt like bam it’s over…easy peasy…judgment made.

My Favorite Laughable Moment: I’m not sure if I could choose between when Magnus told Kendrick everything that happened via a few grunts, but then Kendrick had to repeat it out loud for Anisa to make sure he’d understood everything. It was hilarious! Or when Effie put on a little singing routine in Anisa’s hospital room. Holy hell the props! Only Effie!

Now what was he supposed to do? “Bloody hell! Not only am I stuck with a woman, but a feisty, hardheaded one, at that.”

“Take your Scottish skirt, your hairy muscular legs, and go back inside. Leave. Me. Alone.”

Look, she likes yer legs. She’s not wimpy. I like her spirit.

“Yer opinion has nay bearing in this matter.”

“Does too,” she mumbled and shifted away from the rock’s roughest edge.

Bloody hell, she thought he was talking to her. Ronan stooped so he could examine her; at least her hearing was still good. She’d taken quite a tumble over that boulder he’d tried digging out on several occasions, but that was just too damn big to remove by himself. The deeper he shoveled, the larger the feckin’ thing became. “Are ye hurt, lassie?” He ran his hands over her, searching for broken bones.

She rolled and, before he knew what she was about, wrapped her thighs around his legs, slipped her arms under his armpits and flipped him over her head. He landed on his back, the wind knocked out of him, and his Scottish temper rose like the mist over the bogs.

Oh yeah, I like her. Shift, so I can play tumble, too.

“Ye are a fool if ye think ye’re playing tumble with her.”

The woman slowly stood and weaved for a bit. “What in the hell are you talking about? I wasn’t playing tumble. I was getting your grubby hands off me.” She pressed two fingertips to the part of her forehead exposed by the helmet. “Why do I feel as if I’m having a three-way conversation?”

“I wasna making improper advances. I know how nasty that blasted boulder is. I was merely searching fer any injuries ye may have suffered.” Ronan backflipped into a stand. “Ye look exhausted, even though ye still have enough vinegar in yer system to knock me on me arse. I apologize for me boorish actions earlier. Of course ye’re welcome to spend the night in me warm cabin, fed and undisturbed.”

“After all I’ve been through this past week, I don’t trust you any more than a rabid dog or a raging bear.” She planted her hands on her rounded hips. “Frankly, your change in attitude is too quick to be believed. Even so, my French politeness demands I apologize.” She glanced away fer a beat as if the apology was going to cost her a fine fortune.

Then her gaze connected with his and part of him, his soul, his heart—he had nay clue—did a strange, slow roll, taking his breath with it. “Sir, you are much too kind. As dirty as I am, I’d only mess up your house. I’ll just keep moving on.” She bent to retrieve her flashlight. “Thank you. I’m sorry for my attitude. I know I was being bitchy.” She gave an audible sigh and shook her head a time or two. “That remark about your skirt was also uncalled for. I hope you’ll forgive me for my thoughtlessness.”

Her heartfelt request fer forgiveness softened his mood. “Outsiders dinna understand the strong pride we have fer our plaid, our kilts, our traditions. Come inside. I’ll heat ye some soup.”

“Thanks, but no. An intelligent woman would not go into a strange man’s cabin alone.” She made two steps and he picked her up by the waist and tossed her over his shoulder. She wrapped one arm around his neck, inhaled his woodsy scent as she clasped that wrist with her other one, shifted over a tad, and kneed him in the balls.

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph,” he breathed as he dropped to his knees, released his grasp on her, and rolled onto his side, holding his privates. “Bloody fokin’ hell. What did I do to deserve that?”

Anisa leaned over him. “Feeling a little sick to your stomach, are you?”

“Ye are a demon. A ball-crushing demon.” He held his crotch, his knees bent and his kilt showing he wore nothing beneath it.

She shuffled from one foot to the other as she stared at his Scottish bagpipe. Bet he could hit a lot of high notes with that thing. “You . . . you startled me when you grabbed me like that.”

“Well, ye needna be afraid now. I couldna molest ya, even if I wanted to, which I dinna. I’m betting foreplay with ye would be like grabbing hold of an electrical wire while sitting in a tub of water.” He groaned and cussed some more. “Hell, I bet yer vagina is lined with shark’s teeth.” His continued gasping still indicated he was fighting for enough breath to talk.

She leaned over and shook a finger at him. “Just keep that image in your mind, buster, and we’ll get along fine.”

Everything I Left Unsaid

Always answer a ringing phone!

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romance Suspense

Book Length (Est.): 352 pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

I didn’t think answering someone else’s cellphone would change my life. But the stranger with the low, deep voice on the other end of the line tempted me, awakened my body, set me on fire. He was looking for someone else. Instead he found me.

And I found a hot, secret world where I felt alive for the first time.

His name was Dylan, and, strangely, he made me feel safe. Desired. Compelled. Every dark thing he asked me to do, I did. Without question. I longed to meet him, but we were both keeping secrets. And mine were dangerous. If I took the first step, if I got closer to Dylan—emotionally, physically—then I wouldn’t be hiding anymore. I would be exposed, with nothing left to surrender but the truth. And my truth could hurt us both.

Mindy’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Randon House Publishing Group – Ballantine in exchange for an honest review*

Annie McKay is running from an abusive husband that she knows will probably kill her one day. While on the run she gets a hold of a phone that keeps ringing. It’s a phone so what is a girl to do besides answer it?  The mysterious voice on the other line will change her world forever. All he wants is for her to watch an old man in the same trailer park but what she wants from him in return sets her body on fire.

Dylan Daniels has had a rough past. What better way to escape than to buy a mountain and never leave. When he called his phone to get an update on Ben he never imaged what the mysterious woman would bring to his life. His body feels alive. Dylan never leaves his mountain unless it is for business. But he will do whatever it takes to keep Annie safe. But will she like what she sees?

This is a book you have to experience firsthand. I was not too sure about this when I first started reading but once she answered the phone for the first time I was hooked. All of the secrets, drama and lust is enough to catch any reader’s attention.

This is the first book in the Everything I Left Unsaid series. The chemistry between the characters is intense. The storyline is like a contagious virus that you know you want nothing to do with but you cannot walk away. All of the danger in the world cannot keep these two apart, except maybe her abusive husband. Oh and that brings me to the ending…..what a cliffhanger! I usually have patience when it comes to cliffhanger endings but not with this one. I immediately had to jump right into the second book in the series The Truth About Him.

Happy reading my friends, this one is like finding a gem on a dark lonely night!

My Favorite Moment: I absolutely fell in love with the first time Annie met Dylan face to face. Something are not meant to be perfect.
