Review of Walk of Shame (Love Unexpectedly #4) by Lauren Layne

“Death by flu, transmitted by kiss.”

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Comedy

Book Length (Est.): 218 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Sparks fly between a misunderstood New York socialite and a cynical divorce lawyer in this lively standalone rom-com from the USA Today bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Love Story.

Pampered heiress Georgianna Watkins has a party-girl image to maintain, but all the shopping and clubbing is starting to feel a little bit hollow—and a whole lot lonely. Though Georgie would never admit it, the highlights of her week are the mornings when she comes home at the same time as her uptight, workaholic neighbor is leaving to hit the gym and put in a long day at the office. Teasing him is the most fun Georgie’s had in years—and the fuel for all her naughtiest daydreams.

Celebrity divorce attorney Andrew Mulroney doesn’t have much time for women, especially spoiled tabloid princesses who spend more time on Page Six than at an actual job. Although Georgie’s drop-dead gorgeous, she’s also everything Andrew resents: the type of girl who inherited her penthouse instead of earning it. But after Andrew caps one of their predawn sparring sessions with a surprise kiss—a kiss that’s caught on camera—all of Manhattan is gossiping about whether they’re a real couple. And nobody’s more surprised than Andrew to find that the answer just might be yes.

Georgie is known for staying out late and partying with her friends, but lately that lifestyle hasn’t had much appeal. What does hold her interest is the man who walks past the front desk every morning at exactly 5 AM. She loves to torment him because he’s the only person she knows who doesn’t seem to like her and it drives her crazy. She likes to be liked, even if it means stopping and picking up donuts every single morning.

“I hope the Wicked Witch’s flying monkeys carry you away and I never have to see you again.”

Andrew has his own reasons for sticking to his tight morning schedule, not that he’d admit to them. He’s a divorce attorney and because he sees the horrible side of marriage he isn’t the type to want to rush into a relationship, and the thought of marriage isn’t exactly on the his list of top things to do. He takes proper etiquette to an entirely new and annoying level.

“It would seem that my incentive to leave and my incentive to stay are one and the same.”

Walk of Shame is a hilariously sweet read. It takes two of the most unlikely people who seem to enjoy driving the each other crazy and puts them in a scenario that can only have one outcome. I mean how could you not fall for someone who would drop everything to take care of you?!?! Mix the sweet with their daily banter meant for nothing else but to win one over on the other and you have an entertaining book.

Review of I Wish You Were Mine (Oxford #2) by Lauren Layne

I Wish

Forbidden Love!

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Length (Est.): 283 pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

In this charming Oxford Novel, hailed by Keri Ford as “a sizzling-loud friends-to-lovers story,” Lauren Layne poses a provocative question: What do you do when you fall in love with your sister’s ex?

A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.

Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

Jackson Burke had all he wanted in life. That is until his career ended with a car crash and his love life ended in a nasty divorce. Jackson is now working as a fitness columnist for the Oxford magazine. Getting his new start in New York has been rough to say the least. That is until he decides to meet his ex-sister in law for dinner. Jackson and Mollie have always been close even when everything started to turn bad for Jackson. However he never noticed she looked this good until now.

Mollie Cunningham is the sister to Jackson’s ex-wife Madison. Mollie has always had a crush on Jackson. Who wouldn’t? He looks as good as he always had and now he is single. Knowing she should stay loyal to her sister’s feelings she knows the worst move in the world would be to take Jackson up on his offer and move in with him as a roommate.

Oh dear…..This could be a very sensitive subject to read and I thought it would. However I loved this book. Mollie feels she owes her sister everything since she forced to raise her once her parents died. Jackson knows the real Madison as a lying evil person. But once thing is for sure, if Mollie wants Jackson then you can bet Madison will step in and claim what is hers. The only problem with this is Jackson knows without a doubt that he does not want Madison back.

This was a fun read for me. And one thing stands true. The heart wants what the heart wants!

Happy reading my friends, this one is a hot romance!

My Favorite Moment: I thought it was perfect when Jackson landed in Texas then went right back home.

Review of Crushed (Redemption #2) by Lauren Layne

Crushed

Sometimes you find your heart where you least expect.

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Comedy

Book Length (Est.): 304 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Lauren Layne’s latest novel about the healing power of redemption tells the story of a crush gone wickedly wrong, proving that what you want isn’t always what you need.

Growing up in New York, Michael St. Claire never expected to spend his twenties wearing cowboy boots. But that was before he learned about his real father, a total stranger with a family in Cedar Grove, Texas. Once in the Lone Star State, Michael meets Kristin Bellamy, who is exquisitely refined and everything Michael always thought he wanted in a woman. The only problem is that Kristin is dating Michael’s new half brother, Devon.

Kristin’s mouthy, curvy sister Chloe has always been in love with Devon Patterson. So when Michael offers to help Chloe break up Devon and Kristin, Chloe agrees to a deal that seems too good to be true. Before long, Chloe finally gets her man, only to make a startling discovery: She no longer wants the guy she had to fight for—she wants the one who stood by her side.

After all he and Chloe have been through, Michael swears he’s damaged goods. Can Chloe convince him that love is worth the risk?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Random House Publishing Group – Loveswept in exchange for an honest review*

Chloe is the perfect example of someone who covers pain with humor. Oh and she’s really good at it. Some of the things that come out of her mouth are so funny you just want to give her a high five on execution. But underneath all that humor is someone who needs a friend like Michael…even if she doesn’t realize it.

Michael has that smackable quality and thank goodness Chloe has no problem putting him in his place. But beneath his rough exterior is a broken man who doesn’t need perfect, he needs imperfect and challenging…even if he doesn’t realize it.

Chloe and Michael together are sweet, challenging, and at times downright hilarious in Crushed. They have a connection from the very beginning that keeps you flipping the pages just to see what will happen next and if they’ll end up where you want them.

My Favorite Moment: Michael’s reaction to Chloe in her Fourth of July bikini.

My Most Heartbreaking Moment: When a confession goes completely wrong. Luckily Michael has some really good friends and they’ll know exactly what to do to “fix” things.

Review of Broken (Redemption #1) by Lauren Layne

Broken

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Military Romance

Hotness Factor: Talk About Some Hot Angry Kisses!

Book Length (Est.): 262 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Lauren Layne’s heart-wrenching novel tells the story of a girl with secrets, a guy with scars, and a love that could save them both . . . or destroy them.

When Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.

Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.

Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Random House Publishing Group – Loveswept in exchange for an honest review*

I love wounded vet romance stories, especially when the woman is as feisty as the brooding-angry-hate-the-world man. Oh and Olivia definitely is. The way she reacts to Paul’s meanness is so perfect you can’t help but smile. She may not know what she’s doing, but she’s sure stubborn enough to stay at it.

Each has their reasons. Olivia is there for her version of redemption. Paul attempts to allow her to stay because of a promise which keeps him from kicking her out.

Paul couldn’t save his friend, but he he’ll do what he can to provide for his friend’s family. It’s his way of coping. Well, that and alcohol. When he’s graced with another companion he expects her to be like all the rest, freaked out about his scars and unwilling to take his mouthy insults, but he was wrong. Olivia is beautiful and she’ll take anything he throws at her. That is until he goes one step too far.

Broken is as heartbreaking as it is heartwarming. It’s a story about two people saving each other from themselves. The attraction between them is intense right from the beginning, even though they both do all sorts of things to ignore it. They’re the right amount of ‘opposite attracts’ to keep their interactions intriguing and keep the reader, in this case ME, completely unsure of what’ll happen next.

My Favorite Laughable Moments: There’s a few moments that had me laughing and all of them had to do with the way Olivia speaks to Paul. Like when she brings up his snake cane, or when she cajoles him into a meal with her. Loved those!

Review of Only With You (The Best Mistake #1) by Lauren Layne

Only With You

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Length (Est.): 368 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Love is the Biggest Gamble of All . . .

Cocktail waitress Sophie Dalton doesn’t exactly have a life plan. She’s perfectly happy being everyone’s favorite party girl. But when a Las Vegas bachelorette party goes awry and an uptight businessman mistakes Sophie for a prostitute . . . well, Sophie wonders if it’s time to reevaluate her priorities. Swearing off her thigh-high boots for good, Sophie slinks back home with damaged pride-and a jackpot of a hangover.

Yet what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay there. On a trip to Seattle to open a new office, Grayson Wyatt meets his latest employee-who turns out to be the same woman he recently called a hooker. Wealthy and gorgeous, Gray is a man used to getting what he wants. And it doesn’t take long to figure out that smart, sassy, sexy Sophie is everything he’s been looking for. As their late nights at the office turn into hot morning-afters, they realize their Vegas misunderstanding may lead to the real thing . . .

Mindy’s Review:

*I received this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Forever (Grand Central Publishing) in exchange for an honest review*

Sophie Dalton doesn’t really have life plans, a great job or any love in her life. While in Vegas celebrating a bachelorette party she gets stuck in the elevator with a very stuck up man that happens to believe she’s a prostitute. Of course, her clothing at that moment led to his speculation. It doesn’t help that she looks exactly like his ex-girlfriend; the one who left his heart shattered.

Grayson Wyatt is a very wealthy man who has a past that will not let him let go and be carefree. While in Seattle opening a new office Gray meets the one woman he thought he would never see again. Feeling sorry for Sophie he offers her a job at his new office.

Gray has gone on a couple of dates with Sophie’s sister and does not feel a connection. He does however feel a great connection to the smart and sassy Sophie. Seeing her every day at the office might just be the breaking point to open up his heart.

This was a good read. The writing is good and the storyline is very sweet. The chemistry between Gray and Sophie is instant even when they don’t realize it themselves.

I would recommend this to anyone that loves a romance story with a little bit of heat.

My Favorite Moment: My favorite moment has to be the company picnic. You have to read the book to see why this is my favorite.
