Review of An Unlikely Setup (Welcome to Otter Tail #1) by Margaret Watson

“You should come with a warning label…”

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Length: 200 Pages

POV: Third Person

Description:

After a disastrous business decision plunged her into debt, Maddie Johnson had only one way to save herself – return to Otter Tail, Wisconsin, sell her godfather’s pub and start over. But the best laid plans…

Quinn Murphy, her former crush and the man she least wanted to see, is running the pub. He wants to buy it, and he’s willing to play dirty. Too bad Maddie can’t afford to take his bid and get out of town.

Maddie hasn’t seen Quinn since a humiliating night fifteen years ago. But she never forgot him. She’s still drawn to him – even though getting involved with Quinn would be an utter disaster.

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author.*

The last thing Maddie wanted to do was return to Otter Tail. She used to spend the summers with her godfather, but after a humiliating one she never came back. That is until he passed away and left her everything from his house to the bar he’d owned.

“There’s a lot to be said for instant gratification.”

Quinn was supposed to buy the bar, but everything changed once the owner passed away. Now he had to convince the new owner to sell it to him for the amount he could afford. He never expected to be told no. Nor did he expect to be attracted to the woman who was basically destroying his future.

“I just like touching you.”

An Unlikely Setup puts two people who just may be destined for each other together…or rather someone they both cared for did. Even after death her godfather worked his magic knowing better than they did what they both needed.

It’s funny and quirky, not to mention a little emotional. It’s a good way to start a series and I look forward to reading more.

Review of See Me (The Donovan Family #8) by Margaret Watson

See Me

Love and Protection

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Suspense

Book Length (Est.): 247 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

When single mother Gabriella Stefano arrives home from work, she’s shocked to find her ex-husband waiting for her in her kitchen. He’s supposed to be in prison.

Gaby manages to call 911 and escape, but she’s afraid her ex-husband’s next stop will be her daughters’ school. Calling Alex Jennings is the logical thing to do – the Chicago homicide detective is a family friend. But no matter how hard she tries to hide it, Gaby’s feelings for Alex are far more than friendly. And when Alex camps out at her house to make sure the Stefano family is safe, it becomes nearly impossible to hide her attraction from Alex.

Alex wants far more from Gaby than friendship. He’s been giving her space to recover from her tumultuous marriage, but being forced to spend nearly all their time together is chipping away at the wall he’s built around his heart. Alex wants Gaby and her girls in his life – permanently.

With Gaby’s abusive ex still on the loose, and the danger escalating, Alex and Gaby have to concentrate on the immediate threat. But when Gaby discovers Alex’s secrets, will they prove to be more dangerous than her ex-husband?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

This is a spin-off of Trust Me. Remember the cop who always goes to the taekwondo class? That’s Alex. And the abused girl in that class? That’s Gaby’s daughter. Ever since then Alex has been a little overprotective of Gaby and her daughters.

Alex longs to be part of Gaby’s life, even if it’s only to know she’s safe. He knows she’s been through hell with her ex and he doesn’t want to seem like he’s swooping in and preying on the weak. No, he wants to do it right. He wants to be there for them, do anything he can for them, and he’ll go above and beyond without the slightest hesitation.

“Have we been sent to opposite corners of the couch for being naughty?”

Gaby had the perfect husband, the father of her girls, but he died. Then she married and man who turned out to be an abusive monster. Luckily she found the strength to divorce him while he sits in jail. Now she needs to be strong for her girls, but finding the balance between independence and allowing a friend to help when needed is more difficult than expected. Especially when that friend is Alex and she’d love nothing more than to live in a world where she could have more with him.

“This condo is soundproof. And I’m going to make you scream, Gaby. A lot.”

With Gaby’s crazy ex out of jail he’ll stop at nothing to protect them…even if that means sharing every single secret about himself.

The Donovan Family series is completely captivating. See Me is filled with action, suspense, drama, and romance. It has a little bit of everything and it’s rolled into the perfect package. I couldn’t have asked for a better series.

The only thing I didn’t like was sometimes when it would switch from following one character to another it would rewind and replay the scene over from a different prospective.

My Favorite Moment: Gaby and Alex will manage to get some time alone, and damn that car is filled with some intense sexual frustration.

“God, Gaby. No. Talking. I’m begging you.”

Review of Save Me (The Donovan Family #7) by Margaret Watson

Save Me

Don’t worry, I got you.

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Length (Est.): 173 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

State’s Attorney Livvy Marini and Detective Ryan Ward have many reasons to dislike each other. Starting with Livvy’s sister once arresting Ryan. But when Livvy’s boss assigns her to interview Ryan about a case, they have to put aside their animosity and work together to keep Ryan’s former partner in prison.

Anson Bates is desperate to get out of jail. Livvy and Ryan unearth information that will destroy his chances for bail, but the more they uncover, the more risky their job becomes. Working to keep a dangerous criminal off the streets, Livvy and Ryan go from adversaries to friends. Then lovers. But when Livvy’s life is threatened, can Ryan reach her in time to save her?

And once she’s safe, can he save himself?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Two unlikely people fall for each other in Save Me.

As State’s Attorney, Livvy is only trying to do her job, but when the person she’s assigned to work with is the same man who made her sister’s life a living hell she isn’t exactly excited about the prospect. Now if only her body could get on board with her mind. She seems strong and tries to be independent, but it doesn’t make much to made her rely on someone she didn’t think she could trust.

“Never thought I’d have to beg you to have sex with me.”

Ryan was once arrested by Livvy’s sister and once upon a time he thought she’d crossed the line, but after his partner got arrested he was no longer sure of anything he’d done had been the right thing. He’d apologized to Cilla, but only time would tell if Livvy would forgive him too. And the longer he has to work with Livvy the more he truly wants that forgiveness…and much much more.

You have to read the Donovan Family books in order because this storyline continues from Cover Me, which was by far my favorite in the series. Any of those lingering questions I had, where things didn’t come to a complete close, they’re finished in Save Me. There’s bad guys, hit men, and tailing cars…not a dull moment at all and yet there aren’t really that many memorable moments.

My Favorite Moment: I enjoyed the teasing that went on between Ryan and Livvy. It made their relationship that much more interesting.

“Got news for you, babe.” He pulled up to the curb at the Daley Center. “The only kind of pillow talk we’ll have will be ‘yes. More. That. Right there. Oh, God’.”

Review of Protect Me (The Donovan Family #6) by Margaret Watson

Protect Me

Let’s Play Pretend

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Length (Est.): 329 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Police officer Mia Donovan is studying for the detective’s exam when her captain offers her an assignment – be Finn O’Rourke’s personal bodyguard for the next three weeks. He’s in town to film a movie, he has a stalker, and the threats are escalating.

Mia isn’t interested – she’s focused on the looming exam. But her captain convinces her that successfully protecting Finn will look very good on her record when promotion decisions are made. So, reluctantly, she takes the assignment.

Finn isn’t the arrogant, egotistical actor Mia expected. There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to the ‘most hated man in America’, Finn’s nickname since he cheated on his girlfriend, a beloved pop star.

But his stalker is lurking and the threat is escalating. Although Mia’s feelings for Finn are growing, her job is to protect Finn, not fall in love with him.

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Mia wants to make Detective and when a protection job is dangled in front of her, even one she really isn’t interested in, she’ll accept it in order to better her chances. She may be the baby Donovan sister, but she’s just as good as her brothers and she wants to prove it, if to nobody else except herself. She spunky, determined, and quite feisty.

Despite what everyone else says Finn is a good guy. His only focus is to get his career back on track and untangle himself from his ever-growing crazy stalker. He’ll need Mia to help him with that…and he’ll enjoy every second of her protection.

The chemistry between Finn and Mia has its ups and downs. There’s definitely a spark there, well more like an explosion waiting to happen, but between their jobs and the stalker they have several what in the world are y’all doing moments.

“What are we going to do about this, Mia? he murmured.

“Do about what?” She needed a moment to get her brain working again.

“This polite, rational discussion we just had. Jesus, Mia, what do you think?”

“It wasn’t real. It was a ruse. A way to hide from the women following us.”

“Not real? Really?” He spun her around to face him. “I didn’t thing you were a coward, Mia Donovan. Yeah, whatever it was that exploded between us surprised the hell out of me, too. But that…that kiss was as real as it gets.”

The storyline in Protect Me is interesting, the stalker adds a little suspense with a side of creepy, and the ever-present Donovan’s add that little extra something I’ve grown to love throughout this series. There is however something that’s a little off, maybe it was the ending, or just me, but it wasn’t my favorite Donovan Family book.

My Favorite Moment: The first time they had to act like an actual couple in order to hide was more than they bargained for.

“Should I actually kiss you?” he murmured into her ear. “Like I mean it? Or do you want me to nibble at your neck and your ear? Play with you, get you worked up a little, before moving on to the main event?”

Review of Cover Me (The Donovan Family #5) by Margaret Watson

Cover Me

Partners in Passion

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Length (Est.): 364 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Chicago cop Brendan Donovan loves the adrenaline rush of his role on a tactical team. So when he’s assigned to an undercover job to ferret out the supplier of a new and deadly sex drug, he’s thrilled. His partner is Cilla Marini, a detective he’d met recently during a traffic stop. He’s intrigued by Cilla, but his sister told him that Cilla doesn’t date cops. Which is exactly what they have to pretend to do. Brendan loves a challenge.

Cilla is shocked to find out that Brendan is her mystery partner. After an incident that forced her to transfer from her district and isolated her from her fellow cops, Cilla knows relationships with cops are off the table. But she’s spent far too much time thinking about Brendan since he pulled her over for speeding. Now, not only are they working together, they have to pose as a couple to find the source of the sex drug that’s already killed several men.

As the action heats up, Cilla and Brendan don’t have to pretend they want each other. But when secrets put them both in danger, will they have each other’s back? Or will their quarry divide and conquer them before they can find their way to happily ever after?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Brendan is an act first ask questions later kind of guy. He’s spontaneous, which as a cop isn’t always a good thing, but that doesn’t keep him from being a damned good cop. His instincts are usually spot on…except when it comes to his own emotions.

Cilla isn’t used to working with a partner, but when her mystery partner on a new undercover job is the same cop who pulled her over for speeding she’s both cautious and tempted. Her new role as Brendan’s girlfriend has a lot of benefits, I mean who wouldn’t want to be manhandled by that sexy cop, but at the same time its hard to tell what’s real and what’s just for show.

“Okay. You going to make a move on me tonight?”

“You looking forward to it?”

She flushed. “Just want to be prepared. So I can practice my stupidly smitten expression.”

Their physical chemistry is off the charts, but both have emotional boundaries that keep them from living up to the full partner potential.

In Cover Me there are so many twists that overlap and spread out in different directions that there’s never a dull moment. There was only one slightly loose end, which tells you what should happen, but not if it actually happened or not. Besides that I think Brendan might be my favorite Donovan brother so far.

My Favorite Moment: The banter between Brendan and Cilla is crazy funny at times. I swear they live to screw with each other.

“I’ll get it out of you in the morning.”

She cocked an eyebrow. “I’d much rather you get it into me in the morning.”

Review of Trust Me (The Donovan Family #4) by Margaret Watson

Trust Me

Fiercely Protective…Fiercely Loved

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Length (Est.): 342 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Raine Taylor has one goal – justice for her murdered sister. She knows Genie’s husband strangled her and left her in an alley – Peter had been threatening to kill his wife for years. The police said there was no proof Peter Northrup killed Genie. So it was up to Raine to make him pay.

When Detective Connor Donovan answers a call about a trespasser outside Northrup’s house, he finds a woman running down the street. When he tries to stop her, he’s left holding her hoodie as she strikes out like a ninja then vanishes like smoke.

Connor quickly realizes Raine is his mysterious trespasser. Now he has to figure out why she was outside Northrup’s house at three A.M. Raine isn’t his usual criminal – she’s a schoolteacher who coaches a tae-kwon-do team of under-privileged girls. And he’s wildly attracted to her.

Raine needs to stay away from Connor. She has a plan to deal with Northrup, and she can’t get involved with a cop. But like two magnets drawing together, she can’t resist him. Can Connor help her find justice for Genie? Or will her sister’s killer claim another victim before they can stop him?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Raine is one of those people who’s strong and determined, but only because she has to be. She’d do anything to make things right and to protect those who needed it, even if it means putting herself in the line of fire.

Raine intrigues Conner; he wants to find out who she is and if all of his theories about her are correct. He’s a very determined man when he wants to be, and he doesn’t take no as an answer.

“Are you going to freak out if I kiss you?” he whispered.

His breath feathered over her skin, warm and fragrant with coffee and tiramisu, and she trembled. “Yes,” she breathed.

He cupped her face with his other hand. “Good. Because I’m already freaking out.” He leaned closer, and heat from his body licked at her skin like flames. “I want to kiss you, Raine.”

I loved the way the two characters were first introduced to each other. They just kind of “kicked” things off. Their chemistry was strong enough to keep me reading, but it’s the suspense that completely captured my attention.

Trust Me is a suspenseful story with the perfect blend of romance. The characters are entertaining, and with Raine you never know what will happen next.

“You’re making me crazy.”

She fumbled her hands to his waist, yanked his shirt out of his pants. “Only fair,” she managed to say. “Because when you touch me, I don’t remember my name.”

My Favorite Moment: Nothing like catching the woman you’re interested in, in a place she shouldn’t be. Sparks will fly! And trees will be abused!

Review of Find Me (The Donovan Family #3) by Margaret Watson

Find Me

A Game of Cat and Mouse

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Length (Est.): 268 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

After witnessing the murder of an FBI agent in a parking garage late one night, Lizzy Monroe meets with the FBI and agrees to work with a sketch artist. But on her way out of the office, she comes face to face with the killer – another FBI agent. She knows from experience what happens when a criminal is a member of law enforcement – cops protect their own. So when the killer shows up at her door later that morning, she knows she has no choice but to run.

From the moment he sees her, Mac Donovan is intrigued by – and in lust with – their beautiful witness. After Lizzy disappears, he spends his free time tracking her down. When he finally finds her on a remote island in the San Juans, their chemistry is explosive and the sex is even hotter. But he’s hiding his identity from her. What will happen when she discovers who he really is? Will she be able to forgive his betrayal? Or will the killer find them first?

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Lizzy is one strong and determined woman. She’s a survivor. There’s nothing that she wouldn’t do when it comes to her safety. She’s also sweet and downright loveable, as long as you’re on her good side.

“I didn’t take you for a stupid, macho dude, but I guess I was mistaken.”

Mac is known more for being the uptight Donovan brother. As a FBI agent he’s a strict rule abiding, straight-laced, duty-bound kind of guy. But something about Lizzy drew him in since the moment he saw her and it’ll be a battle for him to draw the line between right and wrong when it comes to her and his job.

“… I want you to trust me. So I’m going to trust you.”

Mac may have known who Lizzy was, but she doesn’t know him, and they way she meets him is quite interesting. I love how sparks fly even before eyes open.

Find Me is a run and hide, sexy and explosive kind of suspense. It’s not a guessing who the bad guy is, it’s a trying to find and get evidence on him before he kills you suspense…with lots of sexual tension and an undeniable connection.

The Donovan Family Series is addicting and I cannot wait to see what the rest of it will hold.

My Favorite Laughable Moment: There are a lot of great moments, but the one that made me laugh was when Lizzy meets Mia (Mac’s sister). Mia is very protective of her family and she has to make sure the women who her brother’s bring home are up to par. Loved it!
