Review of Grappling for Position (Against the Cage #4) by Melynda Price

“You’re lucky I love you”

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Sports Romance (MMA)

Book Length (Est.): 373 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

This battle of wills is about to go below the belt…

Willow Scott is sweet, innocent, and 100% untouchable. She’s the epitome of everything MMA fighter Regan “Rapscallion” Matthews has always wanted, but will never have. A woman like her deserves more than a scrapper from the wrong side of the tracks—the Scott’s charity case.

Unfortunately for Regan, his best friend’s little sister is all grown up and she’s tired of playing by the rules. When Willow sees something she wants, she goes after it—damn the consequences—and her sights are set on him. With a shot at the Welterweight title finally within his grasp, Willow Scott is a distraction Regan can’t afford. But this willful woman is determined to make him tap-out.

Willow has been in love with Regan Matthews since she was in pigtails and braces. Over the years, she’s all but given up hope of her brother’s friend returning her affection, but a part of her never stopped praying that someday he would see her as more than Kyle Scott’s annoying little sister. If Willow has her way that’s all about to change, and Regan must decide if he’s willing to risk losing his best friend and the Welterweight title for a woman he doesn’t deserve but cannot live without.

**All Against the Cage books can be read as stand-alones**

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Regan has had feelings for his best friend’s little sister since she was sixteen and kissed him, but she was off-limits, and he went a little crazy trying to get over his desire for her. That is until four years later she declares game on and decides to stop holding back her feelings for him, making it extremely difficult to hold back his own.

Willow has been in love with Regan ever since she can remember, she’s even saved herself for him, and when an opportunity presents itself finally get what she’s always wanted she holds nothing back to get it.

Two people in love. A hidden romance from a brother who’d kill them. And a hitman trying to stop a testimony. Grappling For Position pulls you into the world of Regan and Willow and it’s easy to get lost in the pages.

The ending left a little bit to be desired, but overall the storyline was intriguingly capturing. What I wasn’t too fond of was how the books overlapped. I’d remember bits and pieces from the previous books, but couldn’t exactly remember all the details. It made me want to have all the books open at the same time in order to obtain the full picture.

“Why would Kyle send you to talk to me?”

“Apparently, he thinks we’re like this-” Regan held up his crossed fingers. “He obviously doesn’t know we’re like this-” He made a circle with his thumb and finger, then poked his index finger through the hole. “I’m supposed to find out who you’ve been fucking so he can kick his ass.”

– Oh what a tangled web we weave…

Kane “Killer” Kavanagh has one goal in life. He wants to be the best MMA fighter alive. He is training for the MMA National Championships in Las Vegas that are fast approaching. He will not let anything or anyone come in between him and his dreams. And he has yet to lose a fight.

Nora Hannigan has been dodging Kane’s crazy flirting attempts for awhile now. Nora’s best friend is about to marry into the Kavanagh family so she really has no choice but to see Kane regularly. Nora has lots of issues on her own that she is dealing with and becoming friends with Kane could complicate things.

Kane has had the hots for Nora for a long time. He flirts with her but he is too busy for a relationship or anything steady right now. The one night things seem to get a little fuzzy between Nora and Kane is one of the best night’s of their life. They were not prepared for the attraction and feeling they would experience. When Nora gets into some of her mothers trouble the Kavanagh’s will have her back in anything she needs but Kane will be tested on his true feelings for her.

This is the third book in the Kavanagh Legends series and a good read. Friendships and feelings are put to the test. The chemistry is pretty intense and Nora and Kane happen to be really good for each other.

Nora tries to do it all. She goes to school, works with a youth program, has a job that she wish no one would ever know about, but one that pays her mother’s debts, and the last thing she needs is a man to add drama and take up time that she doesn’t really have. But Kane isn’t the obnoxious over the top lady killer she thinks he is. He actually wants to make her life easier, not complicate it.

Kane is focused on being the champion; it’s what he’s been training for and it’s all he wants. That is until he starts spending time with the girl he’s had his eye on forever…Nora. His priorities will get mixed up and when they get refocused some things get bumped out. But Kane has the wonderful Kavanagh clan at his back and they won’t let anything bad happen to him.

Nora and Kane are great! He’s super flirty and she has a mouth that’ll keep him on his toes. Their relationship is never boring that’s for sure.

The Kavanagh’s are an incredible family and every book I read with them in it only proves that point. They’re supportive and caring and nothing gets in their way when it comes to love and family. Becoming A Legend is another captivating and entertaining book in the Kavanagh Legends series. Can’t wait to read more!

There is, however, one phrase that was used so often that it was borderline driving me crazy…”the sound of the familiar voice”. Why can’t the person’s name be used? I mean after a while I was rolling my eyes every time it said that or something similar.

My Favorite Moment is when Kane calls dibs on Nora and what led to him finally making that call. That girl is a warrior!

YAY – Double Review!

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Fight For Me is a sweet and sexy adrenaline rush. From page one the characters drew me in and the story line held me captive. I absolutely could not put it down.

Natalie may look like the typical spoiled rich girl, but she’s not. She’s a prisoner in her own home. A home she’ll do anything to escape. The only thing she didn’t plan on was the lengths her father would go through to get her back.

Knox fought for X since he was a kid, but things aren’t what they once seemed and now he wants out. An out he’ll have to take, because it surely won’t be given.

From the moment Natalie and Knox meet it’s a non-stop suspenseful and intense journey. From being chased by her father and hunted by X’s men to trying to discover the truth about Natalie’s trust fund there is never a dull moment that’s for sure.

“I don’t want you going anywhere without me,” Knox said fiercely. “You’re mine to protect. I will defend you with everything I have.”

There is suspense, violence, and sex so if you don’t like that then you won’t want to read this, but if you do…definitely add it to your reading list!

My Favorite Moment: I was so deeply engrossed in this book that I didn’t even highlight anything, but I think when they finally come face to face with their pursuers and are forced to do whatever it takes to survive…now that was one hell of a moment.

Mindy’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Fight for me is action packed from the moment you start reading.

Natalie is not your typical rich kid. She is trapped in her father’s life ever since she lost her mother. She feels more like a puppet on a string. Deciding enough is enough she runs away from the only life she knows. What she was not prepared for was her father’s employees hunting her down so fast.

Knox is an underground MMA fighter that never loses a fight. Being controlled by a man that he once thought of as a father wants him to throw a fight. Knox just does not have that in him. Deciding he has to get out of the life might just cost him his life.

Knox runs into Natalie when she is fighting for her life. Having the ability to help her he decides it is best for them to stay together to stay safe. When Natalie discovers some secrets in her family she has to decide how she is going to proceed with getting her father away from the family money that belongs to her. Knox has people out for him as well and they both have targets on their heads.

This was a fun read for me. The action that is in this book has you unable to put it down.

My Favorite Moment: I agree, I was so into this book that I do not have a favorite moment. I loved the entire book.

Review of Stacked Up (Worth the Fight #6) by Sidney Halston

Stacked Up

You can’t knock something until you try it…

Genre: Sports Romance (MMA)

Book Length (Est.): 265 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

Opposites attract in this seductive novel from the author of Against the Cage (“Funny, steamy, scorching.”—Toni Aleo), with a chiseled MMA fighter falling for a single mom who could use a real man in her corner.
Working two jobs to support her infant daughter is harder than anything Penny Richards has ever done, but it sure beats living under the rules of her stepfather, a television preacher who demands a picture-perfect family. And if Penny hadn’t struck out on her own, she never would have met Travis Calhoun. The intensely physical heavyweight brawler has a way of drawing out her wild side. But Travis lives fast, with no responsibilities—and that just isn’t for Penny.

Most of the women in Travis’s circle wear tight clothes, high heels, and tons of makeup—not pearls or plaid headbands. But once he works past Penny’s inhibitions, Travis discovers a kindred spirit who longs to trust someone with her body, and her secrets. Still, Travis can’t help but wonder if this rich girl is just slumming it before she returns to her privileged life. Now it’s up to Penny to prove that she wants her hard-edged, hard-loving fighter just the way he is.

YAY – Double Review!

Jennifer’s Review:

Penny has a lot of secrets, but they’re secrets of necessity. She just wants to take care of her daughter and stay off the grid. She never expected to find friends who’d have her back no matter what.

Travis had a hard life growing up and it’s what led him to the MMA, but he loves his life now…or at least he thinks he does. That is until Penny turns it completely upside down. He was so set in what he wanted in life that when something different came along he tried to deny it because in his eyes accepting it would be turning his back on everything he thought he wanted. But sometimes you can have it all.

She’s fiercely independent and he’s overly protective, it’s a match made in heaven.

Stacked Up is a sweet story filled with a lot of cuteness (mainly because of one little girl). It’s one of those curl up with blanket kind of books that’ll leave you smiling and content.

My Favorite Moment: The ending! The last things Penny and Travis say to each other put the perfect end on this book.

Mindy’s Review:

*I received an ARC of this book free from Random House Publishing Group – Loveswept via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Penny Richards ran away from her family to start a new life with her infant daughter. Working two jobs just to pay the bills is hard but she will do whatever it takes to raise her daughter and for her stepfather to stay out of her life.

Travis Calhoun is a MMA fighter for and trains at Worth the Fight. He is also the main face for the television series they are filming at the gym.  Travis lives and breathes for fighting. His fight coming up could mean he is on his way to fame and the big money.

Travis meets Penny shortly after she arrives in town at a local bar that she is working at. He is instantly drawn to her beauty but knows deep down she comes from a privileged life and probably has secrets. But that does not stop him from stopping by the bar every night to check on her and make small talk.

Their friendship quickly turns to a fiery romance when they decide to give in to their temptation. But when Penny has no choice but to let him in a little secret, Travis has to decide if he wants to continue the relationship knowing Penny has a daughter since he lives in a world with no responsibilities and prefers it that way. When the cameras catch her with him and her secret is out Travis will stop at nothing to protect Penny and her daughter from the stepfather that demands a picture perfect family.

This is the sixth book in the Worth the Fight series and I love each one a little more. This one really sucked me in with Sarabelle and her cuteness. I love a strong man that can be brought to his knees by a little girl. The passion between Penny and Travis is pretty hot as well.

My Favorite Moment: I love ho Travis was willing to do whatever he needed to make sure that Sarabelle was safe and would not have any future issues with people wanting to take her away no matter what the outcome was with him and Penny.

Review of Body Lock by Grace Hugh

Body Lock

Love and Self-Control

Genre: Sports Romance (MMA)

Book Length (Est.): 150 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

MMA fighting sensation Jans “The Dragon” will do anything to protect LeAnne… and their secret baby.

I was a nobody. A nobody with a junkie mom and a sh*t life. I swore I’d never be like her, I was good!

Until bad boy Jans rolled through like a storm, claiming my body with his dominating hands and my heart with his icy blue eyes. My mom finally did something right when she became Vinnie, Jans’ dad’s, arm candy girlfriend.

Then everything went wrong.

I know Jans didn’t mean to do it. He was only trying to protect me.

Her innocence was like an addiction, I was obsessed from the moment I saw her. I couldn’t get enough of her sweet lips and delicious taste.

My Capo father would kill us if he ever found out. He wanted to marry LeAnne off in some bullsh*t Family alliance but I had other plans.

It all fell apart when I f**ked it up. Bad.

Bad like a two year, federal penitentiary sentence bad.

Now I’m out and nothing will stop me from doing what I have to and exposing Vinnie’s treachery to protect LeAnne.

I’m 6’2″ and 220 pounds of hard, fighting muscle. I’ll battle it out in the cage and score our future. All I have to do is beat every opponent the Families send at me, no limit, in one night. Impossible but I’ll come out on top.

*Note: Body Lock is a full length novel, heavy on the steam, with a happy ever after ending and no cliffhangers.*

Jennifer’s Review:

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Jans is the oldest son of a mob boss, but all that means is he’s a possession. He fights and his father makes tons of money off him. But he’s not the stupid fighter everyone thinks he is. He’s a sweetheart who’d do anything for the woman he loves.

“She stares at me and I see she’s scared. I don’t ever want to see that look on her face again. No one will ever maker her feel fear again. I’ll make sure of it.”

LeAnne has never had a say in her life, not since her father died. Ever since then she’s basically been luggage her mother’s pulled around through whatever temporary conditions she had. When LeAnne’s mother moves in with Jans’ father she learns what fear is. She’s completely terrified of him and his empty eyes, but with Jans there it’s the only place she’d want to be. He makes everything worth it.

Body Lock has mobsters, underground MMA, and a hidden romance. All of those things sound perfect, which is why I had such high hopes for this book, but nothing really captured my full attention. It starts off in the present, which had me wondering about some of the things mentioned in the synopsis, but then it goes back to the beginning of when LeAnne and Jans met and continues onward from there. The entire time I kept wanting to get back to the present so I could see what happened after what I’d read in the beginning.

Nikko “the  Bull” Del Torro is an ex-marine turned MMA fighter. His career is in jeopardy as he suffers from PTSD and looses control at CFA press party. The only that keeps his demons quiet is fighting. Losing his career could mean losing himself.  The only thing that can save his career is spending some time with a doctor.

Violet Summers just went through a nasty divorce. All she can think about is the one time she let loose on her flight to Las Vegas to start her new life. Being  a physiatrist she understands  how the mind works in funny ways. Her ex husband will not leave her alone but the one thing that stops her dead in her tracks is her new patent that walks into her office.

Nikko is just as stunned as Violet when he walks into his mandatory meeting with the psych doctor. They have both been thinking about each other ever since that day in the airplane. Violet wanting to keep this a professional and Nikko wanting to lick her from head to toe.

Violet wants to do her job and help Nikko with his temper and nightmares but she has to get to the bottom of what happened to him. Turning to her ex husband for help turns out to be a very bad move.

This is the first book in the series that I have read. This was such a fun read for me. Even though Nikko is suffering from PTSD he still has a sense of humor that just kept me laughing. Oh and his daughter, greatness!

My Favorite Moment: I loved the entire book!

Nikko is ex-military turned MMA fighter. He doesn’t fight for the fame or the girls, he has his own personal reasons. It’s those personal reasons that have him facing a suspension and land him in therapy. A therapy that returns his Clover. And his sweetness. Dang this man can melt a heart.

Violet’s world got turned upside down and she ran away, but she’d better off in Vegas. She has her practice and a great best friend/receptionist…oh and a sexy new client that she met the day she moved to Vegas. One in which her fantasies had hoped to meet again, just not as a patient. It’s hard trying to remain professional and ethical when you know exactly what you want.

“Closing the short distance, Nikko pressed his mouth against hers. Ho-ly hell, if he was hoping to prove that his memories of her kiss were nothing more than overinflated imaginations, then that plan was an epic fail.”

I absolutely loved this book! Nikko and Violet’s first meeting starts off with one hell of a bang and every interaction after that is full of surprises. You never know if she’s going to kiss him, smack him, or throw his sexy ass out. Their chemistry is completely off the charts.

Fighting for Control is exactly that, two strong-willed people fighting for control. Their pain will make your chest ache, their passion will make your heart race, and this story will leave you both satisfied and wanting more.

My Favorite Laughable Moment: When Nikko and Kill are discussing Nikko’s sexuality. I think I laughed so hard I cried.

Violet could feel her cheeks heating. Her heart rioted in her chest, fight or flight flooding her veins. Right now, all she wanted to do was run out of here and go home where she could put on her fuzzy slippers and drown her embarrassment in a bottle of wine while watching reruns of Gilmore Girls.

Nikko’s eyes never left hers, waiting for her answer. Oh, what the hell, her pride and self-respect was already shot to shit. Why not give him the truth? Let him know how ridiculous it was for them to be here together. Maybe then he’d see it for himself, and whatever this thing was between them would disappear. It’d be quick, not so painless, but she’d get over it. She’d dealt with far worse disappointments in her life.

“It’s just that if you knew the real me, you wouldn’t like me, Nikko. I’m quiet, safe, predictable and . . . well . . . boring. I always pay my parking tickets, I never use expired coupons, and my biggest pet peeve is when people don’t put their shopping carts away. Why are you laughing at me? I’m being serious, here. You and I, we’re like complete opposites.”

“I’m not laughing at you.”

He really was.

“I just didn’t realize that expiration dates were that important to you.”

“Well, they are,” she quipped defensively.

“I can see that. I hate it when people don’t put their shopping carts away, too. Pisses me off when they bash into my car. It’s just rude.”

A bubble of laughter broke from her throat. It was like a release valve for her tension, and possibly his, too, because his smile broadened. It was the second time he’d done that since she’d gotten here, and he’d better quit because it was doing funny things to her feminine places.

“As for the parking tickets, I have a stash in my glove box, and I don’t use coupons, so . . .” He shrugged. “One out of three’s not so bad. I’m not scared off yet. What else you got?” He arched his brow, giving her a flirtatious grin.

She never made the conscious decision to sit back down. Her knees just sort of went weak at the sight of him grinning at her. When her bottom touched the chair, he released the corner of the envelope. “Well . . . let’s see. I hate large crowds, keep to myself, and I never get drunk.”

“Large crowds make me irritable, I prefer to be alone, and I try not to get drunk because bad things happen when I do.”

“Is that how you got in trouble with the CFA?”

“Yep. Large crowd”—he held up one finger like it was strike one—“too much whiskey.” Second finger—strike two. “Equals you and me for the next six weeks, baby.” Up went his third finger—strike three.

In her attempt to prove to him how wrong they were for each other, he was proving to her how right they just might be. Or was he telling her what he thought she wanted to hear? “I don’t buy it,” she challenged. “An MMA fighter who doesn’t love the attention, the parties, the women?”

He leaned back in his chair, stretching out in a lazy sprawl. “That’s not my thing.”

“Then what exactly is ‘your thing’?”

“Uh-uh . . . We’re not here so you can get into my head. You were explaining to me why we’re incompatible, and I’m explaining to you why you’re wrong. And while we’re on that subject, I’d like to point out one glaringly obvious reason.”

“Oh, yeah? And what’s that?”

“The sex is incredible. And you can deny it all you want, Clover, but that was all you.”

Her breath seized in her lungs, her response frozen on her tongue. She couldn’t decide whether to be flattered or offended. It pleased her more than it should to discover he thought the sex was as amazing as she had. Especially when she only had one other person to compare it to, while he probably had dozens.

“I thought you said that wasn’t why you asked me here.”

“It’s not. I’m just countering your argument. Oh, and you should also know that I like puppies, stargazing, and moonlit strolls on the beach.” His top lip twitched, barely suppressing his grin.

She gasped in mock outrage and reached across the table, cuffing his shoulder. “You’re teasing me,” she accused.

He chuckled, a low and throaty sound that heated the blood in her veins. “Maybe a little bit. That stuff is for chicks. But my point is, would you like me any more if it was true?”

She thought about it a moment and shook her head.

“Well, I don’t like you any less for your reasons. Now if you tell me you don’t want to see me because I’m a fucked-up mess, then that I understand, and I can accept it. I’m not saying I’m any good for you, Clover, I’m just saying that as much as I’ve tried, I can’t stop thinking about you. I don’t want to like you, but I do. So if you’re trying to scare me off, you’re going to

have to try harder than shopping carts and paid parking tickets.”

Review of Fighting Dirty (Worth the Fight #5) by Sidney Halston

Fighting Dirty

Love Conquers All

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Sports Romance (MMA)

Book Length (Est.): 240 Pages

Book Description/Synopsis:

If you love the MMA romances of Vi Kreeland and Kendall Ryan, Sidney Halston’s Worth the Fight series will knock your socks off! In Fighting Dirty, a geek-chic cage fighter proves that appearances can be deceiving . . . and oh-so-tempting.

With his preppy clothes and horn-rimmed glasses, Enzo Silva is the last dude anyone expects to find in a mixed martial arts gym. A wealthy Brazilian banker who never had to fight for anything, Enzo’s stuck in the amateur circuit—but he burns to make the pros. Maybe that explains the heat he feels whenever he’s around Jamie Lynn Calhoun. The pint-size, magenta-haired bartender with the Texas drawl is everything he’s not . . . and everything he craves.

Tough as nails and independent to a fault, Jamie Lynn—JL to her friends—works hard to pay her bills and keep life simple. Enzo is doing his best to complicate that. Even though she likes to bust his balls, he’s got some kind of a nerdy-hot vibe that makes JL wonder if she might finally be able to let her guard down. It might do the boy some good to spend some time in her world, where blood, sweat, and victory are as sweet as the first taste of real love.

YAY – Double Review!

Jennifer’s Review:

Fighting Dirty starts out hilariously and just pulls you in. I was laughing so hard at times this book should come with a don’t eat while reading warning label…especially in the beginning. Who even would have guessed art class could be so entertaining.

Jamie Lynn basically flies though life by the seat of her pants. She does what she wants, when she wants. She’s like a whirlwind of happy and carefree. Of course that’s on the surface. She has demons of her own, ones she wants to keep hidden, but ones she’ll have to let go of if she ever wants to be truly happy.

Enzo is all businessman with a little MMA fighter beneath those suits. He’s definitely not the type a guy you’d think would chase JL, but he wants her. He spent a year trying to get her to go out with him and after one completely embarrassing display she finally decided to give in. And once he has her there’s no way he’ll let go.

Jamie Lynn and Enzo are complete opposites, but she finds comfort in him and he finds peace in her.

She’ll learn to trust. He’ll learn that sometimes there is someone worth making sacrifices for.

The story is decently paced, but there were times where the plot seemed to just kind of jump forward. There were also times when things would seem to have a great emphasis placed on them, then later there wouldn’t be much to it. Besides that, it was a really good story and I enjoyed it very much.

I love the Worth the Fight series and cannot wait to see what’s next to come.

My Favorite Laughable Moment: Art class! I don’t know about anyone else, but when it got to the part about the apple I think I laughed so hard I cried. Like seriously, who’d even notice that apple…LOL!

Lorenzo “Enzo” Silva is not the typical guy you would think to be into MMA. His all business suits and attitude make him different than the others. He is a wealthy Brazilian banker that has never had to fight for anything, that is until he sets his eyes on the only woman that makes him feel alive.

Jamie Lynn “JL” is the twin sister to MMA fighter Travis and is Violet’s best friend. Hanging around the Worth The Fight Academy means she knows exactly who Enzo is. She also knows that as many times as he asks her out they still have nothing in common. He is wealthy, she is not. But she does have a lot of spunk to herself, always a different color hair, tattoos and a spunky attitude.

Losing a bet to the guys lands Enzo a totally nude modeling gig that has JL’s full attention. Not realizing that she would be there has Enzo embarrassed but might as well make the most of it. JL is in complete shock, not because of him modeling nude but because his body sets hers on fire. Taking the chance and asking him out on a date she will try to break his “everything must be controlled and planned” routine. Needless to say they have the longest date ever. Having so much fun together he gets to know the real JL that no one else really knows. Falling in love with her could cost him everything he has. It could also give them more than they ever thought possible.

I cannot wait for the next book. I have a feeling it will be all about Travis.

My Favorite Character: I really loved when they went to doctor. The results and the reaction from JL is priceless!
